
Benghazi - Moammar Gaddafi's regime ignored the resolution issued by the United Nations (UN). Earlier the UN had approved the application of no-fly zone in the territory of Libya. It also means allowing a military strike on Libya.
The resolution issued by the UN Security Council (UNSC) approved on Thursday 17 March. The resolution urged the enactment of no-fly zones and implement measurable actions to protect the people of Libya, including air strikes.
The resolution was supported by the United States (U.S.), English and French. The U.S. side is expected to immediately conduct an air strike from Sunday 20 March and Monday, March 21 next.
Gaddafi himself did not budge with the latest threats posted against his country. Through a national television broadcast, Gaddafi said he would not give pardon to the rebels who control the City Benghazi.
"It's a happy day. We will destroy your enemy (insurgents)," said Gaddafi, such as the Associated Press on Friday (18/03/2011).
Gaddafi also vowed to follow up on all sorts of attacks sponsored by the UN Security Council resolution. "If the world act crazy, then we will do similar things," said Gaddafi.
While residents in Benghazi itself seemed pleased with the decision of the UNSC. In the region of Tobruk, east of Benghazi, Libyan citizens who are happy fired shots into the air to celebrate the UN Security Council vote on the resolution.
The crisis that occurred in Libya starting on 15 February in Benghazi and spread to the capital city of Libya, Tripoli. The protest was triggered the push for the resignation of Gaddafi who has been in power for four decades in Libya.
Increasingly chaotic conditions at some Libyan military units joined with the opposition and resistance. As a result the heat of battle was not inevitable. Until now there is no official number of deaths. The opposition claimed the death toll reached 1,000 souls.
